The recoil starter is the part that takes the abuse on any pull-start engine — springs fatigue, ropes fray and pawls wear until the engine turns but will not catch. Replacing the assembly is a straightforward job and restores reliable starting.
This is the new-style assembly, fitting WB20 pumps built from October 2017 onwards, part number 28400Z4M801ZB. Earlier pumps take the superseded 28400Z4M003ZA and the two will not swap — worth checking the build date before you order rather than after.
